Foundations in Teaching (FiT) is designed to prepare graduate students for teaching in higher education by developing core teaching skills that can be applied across disciplines. The content of FiT is based on James Lang’s Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning (2nd ed.) and will offer practical strategies and ideas you can incorporate into your teaching. The workshops utilize a “small teaching” approach, focusing on incremental yet powerful changes to classroom instruction.

Format

FiT follows a flipped model, meaning you’ll complete pre-work to build foundational knowledge before each session. During the in-person sessions, you will experience hands-on activities and collaborative problem-solving. Each semester, there will be four in-person *workshops, which you can find listed on the Koehler Center’s Current Events webpage.

*Participants must be able to attend all four workshops.

Benefits of FiT

  • Teaching Preparedness: FiT equips participants with essential knowledge and skills for teaching in higher education, enhancing their readiness for future academic positions.
  • Practical Experience: The hands-on workshop format ensures participants gain practical experience they can directly apply to their future teaching roles.
  • Disciplinary Adaptation: Participants learn to adapt evidence-based teaching methods to their specific academic fields, making the course highly relevant.
  • Networking: The collaborative environment promotes networking with fellow graduate students and faculty, fostering future teaching collaborations.

Digital Badges and Certificate of Completion

Upon completing all four workshops, you will receive a Foundations in Teaching badge and a certificate documenting 12 professional development hours.
