Who can participate?
Any TCU faculty member or graduate student with teaching responsibilities is welcome.
What is the focus of this FIG?
We are exploring experiential learning, all the many alternatives to lecture and reading, in theory and practice including:
- In class practical exercises
- Homework and lab exercises
- Internships
- Capstone projects
- Research and development
We will use our time together to identify and discuss ways in which students can be given opportunities to practice what they are learning in class.
Experiential learning, as defined by David A. Kolb, entails:
- Concrete experience: Learning through practical applications of classroom lecture and reading.
- Reflective observation: Reflecting on the experience individually and with peers, instructors, and coaches.
- Abstract thinking: Drawing conclusions about the subject from the experience.
- Active experimentation: Identifying what to do next in the experiential learning journey.
Of particular importance is to develop partnerships with businesses and institutions outside of TCU who can provide that experience to TCU students. We will also discuss coaching as a model of instruction to connect formal instruction, practical experience, and the individual goals of the student.
Who do I contact to get involved?
