pedagogy in practice

What is a Pedagogy in Practice Workshop?

Pedagogy in Practice workshops are 2-hour workshops intended to promote sound pedagogical practices to the wider TCU community. Do you have a teaching strength that has been informed by research, disciplinary expertise, or teaching experience?

For example, perhaps you know how to…

  • incorporate student-presentations, from teaching students how to give better presentations to managing and assessing them.
  • create and grade writing assignments that help students construct new knowledge.
  • develop service learning opportunities that engage students with the local community.
  • build group assignments that teach students to work cohesively as a team.
  • incorporate undergraduates in meaningful research.
  • make realistic case studies or design simulations that challenge students with real-world scenarios.
  • design international study courses that prepare students to be global citizens through purpose-driven experiences.
  • establish a capstone project-driven course for upper-division students to prepare them for post-graduation employment.

Each semester brings new opportunities to refine teaching practices. What can you share with your TCU colleagues to help them refine theirs?

Who can lead a Pedagogy in Practice Workshop?

Any TCU faculty or staff member can submit a proposal for a Pedagogy in Practice workshop.

In addition to leading the 2-hour workshop, presenters are also asked to:

  • compose a short (700–900 word) article summarizing the topic for publication in the Koehler Center’s biannual Insights magazine.
  • record a three-minute video overview of the topic. The Koehler Center staff will work with you to record your video during the semester of your workshop.

We know time and knowledge is valuable, so The Koehler Center offers a stipend of $300 upon completion of the workshop and submission of the article and video. If multiple people are involved, the $300 stipend can be divided as deemed appropriate by the group.
