What’s Next is a follow up to the Spring 2017 TLC: From Diversity to Inclusion, which aimed at helping faculty and staff transform the campus from focusing on diversity to full inclusion. This shift is important because while diversity involves simply “counting,” inclusion involves make “making heads count.” The focus of the Spring 2017 TLC was to lay the necessary groundwork to have a productive and insightful conversation about the meaning of diversity on a college campus and how to be more inclusive of underrepresented student populations. Participants took part in an in-depth discussion of the implication of the Harvard Implicit Bias Tests to better understand how their own backgrounds informs their interactions with students.
The aim of this follow-up conversation is to create practical strategies for moving toward a more inclusive campus. We will engage with statistics about underrepresented populations to facilitate a more concrete meaning of diversity on campus, as well as discuss ways to improve diversity through specific strategies. Participants will practice addressing issues through a role-playing game about underrepresented populations on campus, and we will analyze of the results of their choices. By the end, participants will be able to create inclusive workplaces strategies for underrepresented student populations. Participants should prepare by taking one of the Harvard Implicit Bias Tests.
