Date(s) - Wednesday September 13
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Smith Hall, Room 104B
In this conversation, faculty will engage in an interactive discussion that examines the challenges we encounter in our attempts to embrace cultural differences in the classroom. The conversation will focus on the following: why attempts to engage diversity in the classroom have backfired; why discussions about sensitive topics often become fraught with fear and defensiveness; and how to more effectively manage constructive conflict and avoid cognitive blind spots. The goal of the discussion is to enhance faculty capacity for fostering a climate of trust within the classroom context. In doing so, faculty will become more equipped in facilitating a tone of honest discourse that draws upon the cultural competencies of both the instructor as well as the student.
